As explained above, passing the NCLEX exam is a major requirement within many healthcare agencies and establishments. Certain states also require the license depending on their specific regulations.

 There are a few different avenues you can explore:

Firstly, you could look into private practices. These usually involve working for a single doctor or group of doctors, and they often have excellent working conditions and pay well.

Whichever path you decide to pursue, make sure to do your research and apply for positions that suit your skills and qualifications. We have listed a few healthcare facilities that you would be able to research and see the type of experience required nurse that they would be looking for:

Clinical Nurse Educator. A clinical nurse educator typically works in a hospital setting, providing education and training to nurses and other healthcare personnel. This job sometimes requires a bachelor’s degree or higher, as well as relevant experience, but it’s not required for you to have an NCLEX license.

Health Care Coordinator/Manager. Healthcare coordinators or managers help organize and coordinate patient care within hospitals and healthcare facilities. This job often requires a bachelor’s degree but not necessarily an NCLEX license.

Community Health Worker. Community health workers provide outreach services to at-risk populations in their communities. They can help link people with resources, provide education about healthy living behaviours, and refer people to health care providers or social services as needed. While experience or certification may be required for this role, it usually does not require an NCLEX license.

Research Nurse Specialist/Study Coordinator. Research nurses work in academic settings such as universities or medical centers conducting research and helping to implement research protocols with participants of studies. Research nurse specialists may have a master’s degree in nursing but do not need an NCLEX license for this credential job position.

Nurse Practitioner (NP). NPs provide advanced practice nursing services such as diagnosing illnesses and ordering tests to diagnose diseases and conditions, prescribing medication and offering general preventive health advice to patients without requiring an NCLEX license for the role (but most states may still require additional licensure).

Case Manager/Care Coordinator/Discharge Planner. Case managers coordinate all aspects of patient care from admission through discharge from a hospital or healthcare facility by helping determine the best treatment plans for each patient—this often includes working with insurance companies and other outside agencies that may be involved in the patient’s healthcare needs—and they don’t necessarily need an NCLEX license to be employed in this role either.

Telehealth Nursing Professional/Virtual Nurse Practitioner (VNP). Telehealth nursing professionals work remotely via phone or video chat providing virtual primary care services such as assessing symptoms, diagnosing illnesses, providing medical advice, referring patients to specialists when necessary, writing prescriptions, etc., thus eliminating the need for physical exams while meeting patients’ medical needs—all without needing an NCLEX license!

Finally, you could also look into working for a research institute, or pharmaceutical company. These jobs tend to be very competitive, but they can be extremely rewarding. Whichever path you decide to pursue, make sure to do your research and apply for positions that suit your skills and qualifications.

The challenges of working as a nurse without licensure

Despite the variety of options available to non-licensed nurses, particularly without passing the NCLEX test, taking such a non-favorable route can have quite its challenges. 

While there are avenues for non-licensed nurses to work in healthcare settings, these paths often come with significant limitations.

• Without the NCLEX, nurses may find themselves confined to roles that don’t fully utilize their skills or education. 
• They might be restricted to positions that are more administrative or educational in nature, rather than patient-centered clinical roles. 
• Furthermore, non-licensed nurses may face challenges in gaining the trust and recognition from peers and patients alike, as the NCLEX is widely regarded as essential for nursing competence and dedication to the profession.

What happens if I don’t pass my NCLEX exam?

So, you didn’t pass your NCLEX exam. It’s not the end of the world – in fact, it’s pretty common. Each year, thousands of nursing students retake the exam. The good news is that you can retake the exam as many times as you need to. There is no limit to how many times you can take the exam, but there is a waiting period of 45 days between each attempt.

So what happens next?

First, you need to contact your BON/RB and let them know that you plan to retake the exam. They will provide you with a list of fees and materials that you need to submit. Next, you will need to register with Pearson VUE and pay the registration fee.

Once you have registered, you will receive an email with your Authorization to Test (ATT). Finally, you will need to schedule your new exam date.

Preparing for the NCLEX can be a daunting task, but it’s important to remember that countless nurses have been in your exact situation before. With hard work and dedication, you will be able to pass the NCLEX and start your career as a registered nurse.

What is a nursing employment visa?

If you are looking to work as a nurse in the United States, there are a few different visa options available to you.

• • The H-1B visa is a popular option for foreign nurses looking to work in the US on a temporary basis. If you have a job offer from a US employer, you can apply for this visa.
  • The Green Card. Your US employer can sponsor you for this and they must first offer you a full-time, permanent nurse position. Once they have done this, they will need to complete a process known as “labour certification” on your behalf (PERM).
  • The TN Visa is only available to Mexican and Canadian nurses. Mexican and Canadian nurses may work in the US with a special TN visa if the individual has an offer of employment, a license to practice in their home country, and pass the NCLEX and state licensure requirements.

The process for applying for each of these visas can be different, so it’s important to do your research before you start the application process.
